2017 Albatross Ridge First Flight Chardonnay
2017 Albatross Ridge First Flight Chardonnay

Aromas of toasted brioche, sea salt, baked apple, stone fruit and white flowers jump out of the glass. Flavors of pear, and tart apple are framed by a subtle touch of vanilla spice and layered acidity and minerality leading to a long rich finish.

Wine Details

The 2017 Vintage began slightly early with budbreak in the last week in February amongst our earliest blocks. Weather was mild during flowering and bloom, but there was a good amount of wind throughout spring which limited yields to around One Ton Per Acre in the Chardonnay. Summer weather was warmer than average, with the weather cooling down in September. This allowed for a long 21 plus day picking window for the Chardonnay fruit which came in after several small picks spaced out over several weeks. For the first time we experimented with using a concrete tank to ferment and age some of the Chardonnay wine. Our First Flight blend is a combination of 90% new French Oak barrels and 10% concrete tank. Made from less than One Ton of fruit picked at the end of the vintage. The 10% addition of the concrete tank balances out the richness of the new French Oak. This wine shows powerful minerality and richness young and will continue to integrate and benefit with extended aging.
